Installed
in the eastern Caribbean
Sea, Guadeloupe is an
archipelago of five
main islands. Guadeloupe
covers a total area
of 1628 square kilometres.
The archipelago is at
the origin under the
control of France. Thus,
Guadeloupe is also part
of one of twenty-six
French regions and is
closely linked to the
Republic. Guadeloupe
is a major tourist destination.
There are a number of
places to visit in Guadeloupe,
located in five of its
islands. Different places
to visit in Guadeloupe

its revenues, as tourism

in Guadeloupe.
In
November 1493, Christopher
Columbus was the first
European to land on
the island of Guadeloupe
in search of fresh water.
Santa Maria de Guadalupe
de Extremadura is the
name given by him to
these islands. Guadeloupe
consists of five main
islands, namely the
Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre,
La Désirade,
Les Saintes and Marie-Galante.
The island of Basse-Terre
is characterized by
a rugged volcanic, while
the island of Grande-Terre
is characterized by
a number of hills and
plains level. The islands
of St. Barthelemy and
the French side of Saint-Martin,
are located further
north. These two islands
were under the jurisdiction
of Guadeloupe until
December 7, 2003, when
these areas relinquished
its control to become
a community overseas.
